Purpose
This document is intended to assist the reader in upgrading older versions of BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows, ARCserveIT, and BrightStor Enterprise Backup for Windows to BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11.5.
Scope
This document relates specifically to:
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11.5
Pre-Requisites
Before you upgrade to BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11.5 please consider the following minimum system requirements for a Host Server installation:
| |
CPU |
: |
350 MHz or Higher |
| |
RAM |
: |
512 Mb or Higher |
| |
Disk Space |
: |
500 Mb or Higher |
| |
Internet Explorer |
: |
6.0 |
This is the minimum specification required for the product to run as designed. Please take into account that if you have applications other than those which come as part of Windows you should factor this into your system configuration.
These figures do not take into account disk space required for the ARCserve (VLDB) database.
You should allow plenty of disk space to allow the database to grow. The VLDB database is created on the same drive you install ARCserve to, and cannot be moved without uninstalling/reinstalling the host server.
Supported Operating Systems for Host Server
Please see the r11.5 Compatibility Matrix on the SupportConnect Website here for an up to date list of supported Operating Systems, as well as compatibility information for Options and Agents.
Windows NT 4.0 Support
Setup will not allow installation of an r11.5 Host Server or Manager Workstation to a Windows NT 4.0 Platform.
The last version of ARCserve to support Windows NT 4.0 as a host server installation is v9.x
File system and Database agents continue to provide support for Windows NT 4.0
What Previous Versions can be automatically upgraded?
BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11.5 can upgrade the following previous releases automatically without losing existing jobs or the ARCserve database:
- BrightStor ARCserve 2000 (7.0) SP5 (Build 1110)
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup 9.01 (Build 2020 or above)
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.0
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1
- BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.0 SP5 (Build 1500) English
- BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.0 SP4 (Build 1400) International
- BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.5 SP1 (Build 2670)
Versions prior to this can still usually be detected and handled by the installer, but these cannot be automatically upgraded. This means that the existing installation will be uninstalled and re-installed losing any configuration settings, scripts, etc in the process.
Alternatively you may elect to skip the upgrade process completely, and perform a fresh install.
If you choose to do this, remove the existing installation using the add/remove programs section of Windows Control Panel. You will loose all existing jobs, rotations, and media pools.
Although you are able to save existing jobs as scripts prior to uninstalling, it is highly recommended that you create new jobs when starting with a new version.
If you are using a licence key which upgrades a previous version, it does not require you to have that software installation present to upgrade the licence for that product.
If you uninstall the old versions, you should check/delete any files or directories left behind from the old installation, especially if you intend to install to the same location.
Older versions of ARCserveIT may also leave behind registry entries which may cause the installer to think an older product is installed. Check under HKLM\ SOFTWARE \ ComputerAssociates \ ARCserveIT \ for old, no longer relevant entries and delete them.
Uninstall may require a reboot to remove files in use before setup of the new installation can continue.
Planning Your Upgrade
You should take time to consider your strategy for upgrading your current installations. Here are some key points you need to be aware of:
- If you have a BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows SAN installation you must upgrade all of the servers participating in the SAN configuration at the same time. You cannot run mixed versions of BrightStor ARCserve and/or Enterprise Backup for Windows in the same SAN configuration.
- You cannot upgrade only some of the options or agents on a host server, all components must be upgraded, or the components you choose not to upgrade must be uninstalled.
- If you are upgrading the Open File Agent, Image Option, or Serverless Backup Option, this will require a reboot after installation.
- If you do not intend to upgrade database or file system agents on remote servers at the same time as the host server, r11.5 provides backward compatibility with agents from these previous versions:
- BrightStor ARCserve 2000 (v7.0) SP5 (Build 1110)
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup 9.01 (Build 2020 or above)
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.0
- BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1
- BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.0 SP5 (Build 1500) English
- BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.0 SP4 (Build 1400) International
- BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.5 SP1 (Build 2670)
Please see the Getting Started Guide (Chapter 2) on the ARCserve r11.5 CD for further Backward Compatibility information.
- You cannot use a newer version of a file system or database agent with an older version of host server. For example you cannot use an r11.5 Exchange Agent, with a v9.0 host server.
- If Internet Explorer is not at least at v6.0 then installation will upgrade your installation to this minimum level. This will also require a reboot before installation can be completed.
- If Windows installer is not at the minimum required level it will be upgraded. This will also require a reboot before installation can be completed.
- Upgrading the Oracle Database Agent will require that you stop/start the Oracle services after installation.
- If upgrading Filesystem or Database agents please refer to the release notes on the product CD for minimum supported versions/requirements. The minimum requirements/service pack levels, etc may have increased since the last version you installed. Please ensure these requirements are met before attempting to install/upgrade the agent.
- If you submit saved job scripts to the job queue regularly from an older version of ARCserve or Enterprise Backup, you may need to re-create these after installation with the upgraded version of ARCserve.
- It is highly recommended that you check your existing ARCserve database is consistent before upgrading. For information on checking and repairing the ARCserve VLDB Database see TEC376895. If you are using SQL as the database see TEC353603.
- If there is Database corruption that cannot be repaired, or you estimate will take too long to repair, it is suggested you initialize and start off with a clean database. Please see FAQ253473 and FAQ253476 for further information on initializing a VLDB database.
- If you received a Live Trial CD from CA, this requires that you enter a licence key code during installation. Installation cannot continue without it. Online Registration for Live Trial CD's in r11.5 as part of the installation is now optional.
How to Upgrade
Simply insert the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11.5 CD into the CD drive and if autorun is enabled the following screen will appear (if it does not - run setup.exe from the root of the CD):

Click on the 'Launch' button to continue - or if any other option is selected then click on 'BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows' and then 'Launch' to continue.
After a few seconds this will spawn another menu:

If you have previously used ARCserve 2000 or earlier editions such as ARCserveIT you will find the installation process a little different to the older Product Explorer that was used previously.
From this menu you can choose a number of options including reviewing the documentation.
For the purposes of this document we're going to click on 'Install' to continue.
If you cannot see install on the right-hand side like you can see in the screenshot below, click on 'Install Products' from the left hand side of the screen and your screen should show the same options as below :

If we're upgrading a Windows host server or remote agents/options based on a remote Windows server, then we select the first 'Install' option from the screen above. You can also see options here for installing File-system agents to remote operating systems other than Windows.
For this document we're going to continue by clicking on 'Install' next to the option for 'BrightStor ARCserve Backup, agents, options, and more'.
To continue installation you need to read, and agree to the terms and conditions in the License Agreement.

You need to review and scroll to the bottom of the Agreement before the 'I agree' button is available as a choice. You cannot continue the installation unless you agree to the terms and conditions.
You have the opportunity to customize your installation with your User Name and Organization in the screen below.

Click Next to begin licensing the installation.
Licensing
The installation procedure is slightly different dependant on whether you have a live trial CD, or have a retail boxed version. Whilst the functionality of the product is no different, the licensing differs slightly during installation.
We will look at specific requirements for Live Trial CDs first, and then the rest of the document applies to all installations. If you purchased ARCserve already and are not installing from a Live Trial CD you can skip the section 1, and go straight on to section 2.
- Live Trial CDs (Only)
If you received a Live Trial CD then you must enter the license key that came with your Live Trial CD to continue:

Note: Live Trial CDs have the top two options greyed out as can be seen in the screenshot above. The other options are not selectable with a Live Trial CD.
If you do not have a Trial key code, or cannot find it, click on the Trial button for information on how to obtain one. This will open a page on the CA website with further information.
After you have found or obtained your key code, clicking on Next will bring up this screen:

Type your 25-digit key code into the spaces provided and click 'Next' to continue. If you attempt to continue without providing a license key code, or input an invalid key code a dialog box similar to the following will be displayed:

You will not be able to proceed past this point until you have input a valid key code.
- Non-Live Trial CDs
For regular non-live trial CD's you will see this screen:

At this point you have three options, depending on your needs, or the way you purchased the product.
- Install without Licensing
If you wish to install the product without licensing at this point simply click next and then next again when prompted for a key code.
- Install with License Key code
If you have a product license key code you want to provide during installation, click next and then input your key code as shown in the screen below:

Click Next to continue, and setup will validate the key code if one was provided. If the key code is invalid, the following dialog screen will be displayed:

- Install with ALP Certificate

If you purchased your software direct from CA you should have received a key certificate (shipped either with or shortly after the product), and this will contain relevant licensing information.
Note: The two options above are greyed out on a Live Trial CD and are not selectable. If the options are greyed out in your installation, please refer to the information in section 1 of this document regarding Live Trial CDs.
If you have not already installed the license file on the machine you intend to perform installation to, click on 'Help' for information on how to download and install the latest copy to your machine. This process requires you to login to SupportConnect with your registered ID. If you don't already have a SupportConnect ID, there is a link from the help page that will allow you to create one.
Once you have confirmed the licences have been installed, press 'Next' to continue.
The process from this point on is the same regardless of which licensing method you have chosen:

Although we are going to select 'Local Install' here and click 'Next', you can see that you can choose to install remotely, or create a response file which you could use to run a silent install on one or more machines.
At this point if you have an older version of ARCserve that cannot be upgraded a warning message similar to the one below will appear:

The message in this case identifies that TNGASO 6.61 is installed and must be removed before installation can continue. If no existing software is installed, setup will proceed to the next section:

You can see in the screenshot above that setup has correctly identified that a previous version of ARCserve r11.0 is currently installed, and that it will be un-installed, but will preserve the existing jobs and the ARCserve database.
You can identify if an option is being upgraded in the screenshot above by the red outline around the green checkbox next to the option.
At this time you may also choose to install additional options for databases or hardware you have previously not installed. In the example below you can see we selected the Disaster Recovery Option, and as it not already installed you will see there is just a regular green checkbox around it :

At this time you can also choose to customise the where the product, option, or agent will install to. By default the product will try to install under 'C:\Program Files\CA\'.
For options that require the ARCserve Host server component, the install location for those options is tied to the location where the server component is installed to (You can see in the previous screenshot that the change folder option is greyed out for the Disaster Recovery Option as it requires the Host Server component to be installed to work).
Once you are happy with your selection click on 'Next' to continue :

You are now presented with a summary of the options you selected. Check the information presented and if it is ok then click 'Install' to continue, or click 'Back' to go back and change the configuration.
Clicking next installs/updates the licensing software on the machine you are installing to:

Install will then prompt for licensing of any file system backup agents:

Press Continue after reading the information in the screen above.
If you are used to running older version of ARCserve or ARCserveIT then you may be used to licensing your remote client agents on the machine they are installed to.
With BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 licensing for remote file system agents is performed on the host server which backs these up. You can choose to install licenses for these now, or later on after installation.

By default all options are installed in Trial mode, if you have a keycode and wish to enter it now, then highlight the option you wish to license and click the 'Use License Key' radio button:

Input your 25 digit License code in the box as shown and click on the add button. Repeat as necessary for any further licenses for this or other options you wish to add.
When you have added all of the licenses you wish to at this stage and/or want to continue without licensing, click 'Continue' to move onto the next stage :

Setup now installs the options according to the configuration you have defined. Dependant upon the number of options you have selected, this process may take several minutes to complete.
When installation is complete, you will be presented with an Install Summary screen similar to the one below:

Dependant on the options you have installed or upgraded, further configuration may be necessary. Setup will automatically run any additional configuration screens for the installed/upgraded options as necessary.
If files were in use and could not be replaced during installation, you may be prompted to reboot to complete installation. This will appear as a pop-up box with a Yes/No response. This allows you to choose to reboot later if your business needs dictate an immediate reboot is not appropriate.
Please note that if prompted to reboot at the end of the installation, the product(s) may not function as expected until this has been actioned.
At this point you have completed initial installation and configuration. We strongly recommend that you check for current cumulative patches, service packs, security updates, and added device support patches for your installation and install them at this point.
Latest patches can be found at the ARCserve r11.5 for Windows Patch page here.
If you have remote agents that you need to upgrade, you will need to repeat the upgrade process for servers with agents installed.
